El 18 de julio de 2015, durante el Enlace Ciudadano No. 433, el presidente Rafael Correa acusó a la estación televisiva Ecuavisa de mentir en su noticiero, engañar al pueblo ecuatoriano y ser inmorales, por haber difundido una nota periodística referente a incidentes de violencia protagonizados por estudiantes universitarios durante una reunión, entre ellos, miembros de la Federación de Estudiantes Universitarios del Ecuador (FEUE) y militantes de la agrupación ‘Carlos Mariategui’, allegados al antiguo Movimiento Popular Democrático (MPD) el cual ha sido calificado por el Presidente como un movimiento de “golpistas” y “tira piedras”. En ese sentido, el Jefe de Estado sugirió a la FEUE usar la Ley de Comunicación contra el medio de comunicación para que este rectifique por haber presentado, según su criterio, solo una versión de los hechos.
En el segmento “Solo la verdad nos hará libres”, el mandatario aseguró que Ecuavisa presentó una noticia falsa por haber informado que los agredidos fueron los militantes de la agrupación ‘Carlos Mariategui’ y no los miembros de la FEUE cuando, según él, las cosas fueron al revés. “Que falta de escrúpulos de esta prensa ¡Cómo miente! es algo ya grave”,apuntó. Tras mencionar acerca de la supuesta agresión sufrida por el presidente de la FEUE Carlos Muñoz, dijo lo siguiente: “Imagínense vivir estos momentos es como regresar al pasado. Se defendió y lo apuñalaron en la mano. Lo agredieron y tuvo que ir al hospital y Ecuavisa ¿Qué saca? que fueron agredidos los otros. Es el colmo de la desverguenza A qué nivel de deshonestidad y desvergüenza ha llegado por su odio Ecuavisa”, expresó.
Finalmente, sugirió a la FEUE utilizar la Ley contra la estación televisiva. “Ojalá la FEUE reaccione porque ahora tenemos, gracias a Dios, la Ley de Comunicación que impide a los inmorales mentir tan descaradamente. Es el colmo ¿rectificará Ecuavisa? Debe tener decencia. ¿Cómo es que pasa una versión y no la otra? ¡Qué vergüenza y que nivel de periodismo! Son incapaces de hacerse una autocrítica y todas estas críticas del Presidente son atentado a la libertad de expresión. No, atentado a los inmorales que son. Una sinvergüencería es lo que están haciendo. Están engañando al pueblo ecuatoriano, están mintiendo y lo raro es que no se indigna ante tanta mentira y manipulación…”
President accuses Ecuavisa of lying and suggests using Communication Law against the TV Station
On 18 July 2015, during his Saturday broadcast No. 433, President Rafael Correa accused Ecuavisa TV station of lying in its newscast, misleading the Ecuadorian people and being immoral, after the TV station broadcasted a news story about violent incidents involving university students during a meeting, which included members of the Federation of University Students of Ecuador (FEUE) and members of the group ‘Carlos Mariategui’, related to the old People’s Democratic Movement (MPD), which has been described by the president as a movement of “coup mongers” and “stone throwers”. The head of state suggested that the FEUE should use the Communication Law against the media outlet to make it rectify the newspiece which, in his opinion, only presented one version of the facts.
In the segment “Only the truth will set us free,” the president stated that Ecuavisa presented false information when it reported that those attacked were militants of the ‘Carlos Mariategui’ group and not members of the FEUE when, he claimed, things happened the other way round. “This press has no scruples. How it lies! It is something serious”, he said. After mentioning an alleged attack suffered by FEUE president Carlos Muñoz, he added: “Imagine living right now, it is like having returned to the past. He defended himself and got stabbed in the hand. He was attacked and had to go to hospital, and what does Ecuavisa show? That it was the others who were attacked. It is the height of shamelessness. The level of dishonesty and lack of shame that Ecuavisa has reached because of its hatred”, he expressed.
Finally, he suggested that the FEUE should use the law against the TV station. “I hope the FEUE reacts because we now have, thank God, the Communications Law that prevents those who are immoral from lying so blatantly. This is too much, will Ecuavisa rectify? It must have some decency. How is it that it shows one version but not the other? What a disgrace and what a level of journalism! They are incapable of self-criticism and all the president’s criticisms are attacks on freedom of expression. No, an attack against how immoral they are. What they are doing is shameful. They are misleading the Ecuadorian people, they are lying and the strange thing is that there is no outrage in the face of so many lies and manipulation…”.
